Happy Birthday to Me!

Friday was my 35th birthday. (I'm still about 22 in my head, just so you know!). I had a good day. The highlights included singing the Veggietales CD lustily
(I am reminded of the Elementary Christmas Presentation. I've just checked back but I don't seem to have blogged this at the time so I have to share this story with you now: At the Elementary Christmas Presentation Steve was doing a bit of MCing and said "let's stand and sing this carol lustily together." There were a few raised eyebrows and whispers about his use of the word lustily by the non-British audience. It made me laugh.)
with Naomi and Joshua in the car, and the fab party my friends organised for me. It included pizza, the Beach Boys (not in person), balloon hats, pass the parcel and lots of laughs. Perfect!
Josh had been most concerned that I should have a party so I think he was satisfied too. When I put some decorations up - he brought me the balloons to blow up - Naomi said "Is it for me? Is it my birthday?" Josh immediately corrected her and said"No, it's not your birthday, it's mummy's!". I don't think she cared, actually.

Airport Runs

Yes, that time had arrived - taking our guests to the airport. H left Monday night and J Tuesday morning.
Every time I drive there though, I am struck by how convoluted the route is - it feels like you go round the wrekin to get to it. The government have removed all the squatter housing (Balik-Balik) around the railtrack down there too. It looks so bare and the promised renovation of the railtrack has not materialised yet which makes me wonder if it was just a ruse to move everybody.
Dropping people off is so bizarre here. You literally have 2 minutes to drop your guests and go! You make sure they know how to navigate the inside of the airport and leave them! It has to be one of the most boring airports in the world too with a lack of facilities and shops etc that most other places have now. But the "new" airport is at least being used now - mainly by the domestic airlines - it looks nice - lots of space and light (at least from the outside!).
It's always sad to see guests leave - especially when they have been such a great addition - but at the same time it is nice to reclaim your house!! Rose kept saying, "We can sleep by ourselves again".
At the same time I am looking forward to our next guests - my mum and dad :)

An Interesting Shopping Experience

As you know, Monday is my shopping day. Well this Monday Rose was still off school as the staff were having an In-Service day so I thought I might get there a little earlier. Rose and Joshua didn't want to come with me so I asked Naomi and she said she wanted to come. I asked H if she wanted to come too and she said she would come for the experience. It takes about 25 minutes to get to the supermarket I use. I really like this supermarket because it's the cheapest (I did a price comparison shop at all the closest supermarkets when we got back off furlough. I did a different one each week!) and it has lovely wide aisles - not a given here - and a good range of stock, including brands even I recognise!! What I mean by that, is that there are lots of American brands here but I don't know what's American or Filipino so it makes no difference to me. But recently Weet-Bix has made an appearance. It's from NZ (hence the slightly different spelling)but still, my kids were excited when they spotted it.
Anyway, we rolled up to the supermarket and parked the car. Only part of the car park is covered and I like to park in that section if I am early enough as it stops the car becoming an oven, so we were early enough to get a space there. I go and queue for the ATM and realise my bankcard is not in my purse. Steve had used it last and put it back safe but not in my purse. That meant I had to go to school - closer than our house - and get his card. Kind of tit for tat I suppose! But that meant I was going to lose at least half an hour. The supermarket doesn't open till 9:30 and we have lunch at 11:30 so I don't like to be late back. So I suggested H start the shopping from my vague shopping list - i.e. the only things I don't get automatically. H was a good sport and took Naomi and started after we discussed the things on the list and what my vague notes meant.
I got Steve's card and headed back. There was a large queue for the ATM this time so I thought I had better go and find H and Naomi as they didn't have enough to go on from the list to keep them busy for too long! and I can pay at the till with the card ( a relatively recent phenomenon) Good job because H had done the list and got some bits she knows after 4 weeks we get every week. It's funny though, until you shop for someone else or ask someone else to shop for you, you don't appreciate how exact you are or that for every item you pick up there are at least 3 alternatives. Like I had Surf on the list and H had picked up a blue, big packet and I usually get the purple, small packet! But H was a star. We finished the shopping - including the 25 chicken breasts for prayer meeting! - and headed for the till. I was so glad H had agreed to come!
Then we hit the best bit. When I tried to pay for the shopping on the card the machine wouldn't work. Well, first of all, the cashier has to write the total down and then you both go over to the customer service desk which has the only swipe machine in the supermarket. Then they do the business with the card and you enter your PIN and pay. Unfortunately there was a loose connection between the swipe bit and the main machine so it kept cutting out. In the end I suggested I just get cash out from the ATM. Which I did. What a palaver!
Naomi was a superstar.

March Break

One of the most amazing privileges of living in the Philippines are the tropical beaches we get to visit regularly. Beaches I only ever saw in magazines before!!
This March break we took our visitors to Calapan - our Mission home - and Tamaraw, on Mindoro. We had a lovely, relaxing time - click here for the photos to prove it!

Little Miss Independent

Naomi has hit that stage. Her two stock phrases are "I can do it by myself" and "I don't need help". She gets her clothes by herself by pushing the seat in her room next to the wardrobe and climbing in. About the only thing she admits defeat in, is not being able to put her own nappy on. In fact, she could probably dispense with nappies but she doesn't want to! She has this amazing pouty face with pursed lips that I keep meaning to photograph. And when she is told she can't do something she drops her head and shoulders and moochs off. It is very adorable!
It has taught me to slow down a bit too as she won't be rushed or helped so that we can go quicker. She must do it herself.

A Day of Culture!

I took H and J to the US Embassy Club Shopper's Day (quite the mouthful!) to look for good presents. I have never been before but it was amazing. Loads of choice and not as expensive as I expected - despite being aimed at ex-pats! H was actually pretty restrained but J and I were not!! In my defence, I bought a lot of presents for other people. But I have decided it is a trip I must make with my mum and when my brother and sister-in-law come.
To make the trip completely cultural we took public transport home which consisted of a taxi-ride to the MRT (light rail), the MRT, 2 jeepney rides (we managed to pick two of the noisiest with booming bass! H said I was getting old because I complained of ringing eardrums when we got home! But I did just read an article on ear damage.) and a trike to the house. This was made slightly more complicated as H had bought a big (lovely) box and we had it packed in a cardboard box made especially to fit the bought box. Not only was it a little big when we were sat on public but the security personnel decided they had to open it before we got through to the MRT. And then re-seal it, of course!

Mum's birthday

It was my mum's birthday today and I was super organised - I sent an envelope with cards for birthday and mother's day and pictures from the kids.
Naomi was very funny as she insisted - several times - that her picture was "for my grandpa". I was surprised but J reminded me how tight they were when we were in England. She reckons it'll be 30 minutes before they are tight again when mum and dad visit. I think she might be right!

Naomi's Church

I had the rare chance to take Naomi out by herself yesterday. We took a trip to the bank to withdraw money - which was pretty fruitless in itself as one of the closest ATMs had no money and the other was "off-line". But the trip was memorable because I got to listen to Naomi! She was playing with her dinosaur and praying with it ("To Jesus, Amen") and then sang "God is Good". Then she stopped and said "that's what we do in my church". It was cool to get an insight into what she does at Church. Then she said "you are my best friend, mummy and so is my teacher at Church".
My heart smiled.
